Antique Bucherer Sterling Vermeil & Guilloche 17 Jewel Lapel Watch

NWS 1-1502

~ Expertly enameled using a technique called "guilloche", the master jeweler at Bucherer has allowed us to see the details engraved into the sterling silver which underlies the transparent, pale yellow, enamel glass. Even delicate stripes have been engraved into the bow, so that it looks like a gros-grained ribbon. Exquisite!

~ The watch is suspended from a lovely bow brooch made of solid sterling silver, and lushly coated with hand painted, red enamel. The silver has a light coat of vermeil (gilding) which is still visible. The winder is also gold, but has not been not tested for karats.

~ The clasp is original to the piece. It is a "C" clasp with tubular point protector. This indicates an origin of probably early 20th century. It is marked "Swiss Made" on the bottom of the white face, and "Bucherer 17 Jewels" with a crest above the name. It is meant to be manually wound. The watch does keep time, but it has stopped, and I don't want to monkey around with it. It could use a professional cleaning and lubricating. I'll leave that to the pros.

~ The name of Bucherer is world famous for it's top quality manufacture of fine watches and watch parts. In fact, they make watch parts for Rolex. Bucherer is still a family owned business in Lucerne, Switzerland, started by Carl-Friedrich Bucherer in 1888. Their antique timepieces are now in great demand by collectors and those who appreciate fine jewelry.

~  Measures 2 3/8" long and slightly over 1.25" widest.
