Panetta Diamond, Emerald & Ruby Lizard Brooch on Hold NWS 8-1492 ~ Isn't this a wonderful brooch! There's something about a little diamond, emerald and ruby lizard on your lapel that just lifts your spirits. And this one looks like it came from a master jeweler's case, like Harry Winston or Tiffany. No, this piece is indeed a costume piece, but it was made by a master jeweler nonetheless. Panetta was a master platinum worker who learned his craft in the 19th century in Italy. In the 1930's, because of the Depression, he switched his focus to faux materials but applied the same master's skill to create some of the most beautiful of the Golden Age of American Jewelry. The perfection of his costume pieces is readily noticeable. ~ First, let's look at the back of this pin. Notice all the "holes"? Those openings are there so that the stripe of emerald that run down the lizard's back, are surrounded by light, which, in turn, makes the faceted, faux emeralds positively glimmer. From a model-maker's standpoint, this is more expensive to do (the more detail in a design, the more it costs to make it). But Panetta always reached the zenith of perfection. Look again at the holes in the back. Notice that there are slotted openings, and then above and below are round holes. When seen from the top, it makes the lizard's emerald stripe look like it's floating in air. And each and every stone has been prong set by hand. ~ The lizard has faceted, faux ruby eyes, while the body is completely covered with pavé-set, faceted, faux diamonds. ~ The arms, legs and tip of his tail are all made of solid goldtone metal, etched with lizard skin details. ~ He measures 2.85" long and 1.25" wide. ~ Marked "PANETTA © " on the reverse. c. 1958, In excellent condition, all stones are original. Price = $265.00on Hold b6, k-p2 Who was Panetta? |
