Wild Art Deco Beaded Necklace NWS 8-1481 ~ This necklace is wild! It was made in Austria in the early 1930's (the clasp is marked "made in Austria"). It has all the exuberance of the Art Deco Movement, which caught the whole world on fire! Art Deco design would come to impact, in fact, everything from automobiles, to architecture, to jewelry. ~ There are 15 big, fat, black and green beads. They are made from some kind of early, but substantial plastic. They are not Bakelite. Now, here's the thing: somehow, some kind of crazy genius was able to cut each one of these beads open, in a zig zag pattern (like the Chrysler Building in NYC - that same sort of zig zaggy Art Deco design), and fit it together with another bead, cut the exact same way (like a jigsaw puzzle). These halves have been solidly glued together, and they aren't coming apart anytime soon. The hand work in this necklace is just phenomenal! ~ In between the largest beads are smaller, faceted beads in a shimmery green color. In fact, they have an iridescent coating that flashs colors of the spectrum, like a prism hanging in a window. The process of creating an aurora borealis luster was invented in the 1920's, but did not come into common use on rhinestones until the 1950's. These beads are not only a new innovation for the 1920's, but they are also plastic, instead of the much heavier crystal that was much more common at the time. ~ Finally, in between each bead is a tiny, black "spacer" bead. ~ The necklace terminates in an iridescent shovel clasp with brass findings. ~ The necklace measures 23.25" long. Largest beads measure .75" across. c. 1925, in excellent condition Price = $165.00 deco, nex 2 |
