Marcel Boucher 'Ballet of Jewels' Sterling Vermeil Ballerina Brooch on Hold NWS 8-1386 ~ In perfect form, this Boucher ballerina is stunning. Made of solid sterling silver, she's been plated with a lustrous gold, called vermeil. During World War II, costume jewelry designers were obliged to use sterling silver for their jewelry, as all other metals had been restricted for the war effort. ~ The bodice of her costume is set with dozens of pavé-set, faceted, faux diamonds. As she leaps gracefully into the air, the pleats of her skirt open to reveal more faux diamonds, while the ruffles of a petticoat fan out from underneath with large, emerald-cut, faux emeralds. ~ This famous ballerina measures 1.75" high and 2.75" from toe to toe. ~ Signed on the reverse "STERLING" and a number that I can't read. c. 1947, in excellent vintage condition. Research: For more information about the Boucher Ballet of Jewels series, see the book, American Costume Jewelry, by Brunialti & Brunialti, p. 205-207. The advertisement shown above is from "Vogue Magazine", April, 1949. Price = $465.00on Hold b 2, a-c 2 Who was Boucher? |
