Enamel & Crystal Bow Brooch NWS 7-1118
~ This is an incredible work of art, one that has taught me a lesson. Never say never! There was a time when I would have said to you, "I'm not a 'pink' person. And I'm not a 'bow' person". That's what I thought, ... until I saw this incredible beauty. It is jaw-dropping gorgeous!! ~ This is an old pot metal beauty from the late 1930's, probably an early example of the Retro Design era which peaked in the 1940's, with bows, ribbons and swirls as popular design motifs. ~ The reverse of the pin is pot metal, but the front has been coated with thickly plated rhodium, and has been set with dozens upon dozens of pavé-set, faceted, clear crystals of the finest quality. ~ During this design period, ribbons were frequently depicted wrapped around stems of flowers, with large bows incorporated into the design. You can see that here. At the top is a large bow, partly done in rhodium and crystals, and partly hand painted with pink enamel; the stems of the flower buds were also painted with a darker, raspberry enamel, but has largly worn off over the past 70 years. In fact, if you're looking for perfect, you should probably leave this page right now, because this is an oldie and it has some gray hairs, so to speak. ~ There are 4 large, faceted marquises that form the flower buds, 2 are pale pink, and 2 are deep raspberry. ~ Measures a whopping 2.25" wide and 3.75" high. ~ Actually, I have probably photographed this brooch incorrectly: because of the location of the long pin stem, I think it was designed to be worn sideways. No matter, you can wear it any way you wish! c. 1938, the enamel shows signs of wear around the edges, but it's still one of the prettiest brooches in my collection! Price = $75.00
