c. 1910 Red Glass Pendant Necklace NWS 5-1100 ~ There's something about japanned metal that makes jewelry look quite dramatic. "Japanning" is the process of coating the metal with black enamel, and then annealing it in a special oven; the resulting effect is quite spectacular; in this pendant, the pronged setting for the red glass stone, the bale from which the pendant hangs, and the chain have all been "japanned" and the result is stunning ~ The red glass itself is a highly polished, 6-sided cabochon, with Gothic-style, black prongs ~ About an inch above the pendant are 6 red glass beads - 3 on either side of the center; 4 of these beads are oblong, and 2 are round; the 2 rounds separate the oblongs, for perfect symmetry on both sides ~ The original clasp is called a spring-ring (the same clasp we use on our modern jewelry) which has lost a bit of its spring from lack of use over the past century; still, it works fine, you just slide it closed with your finger; we are lovingly patient with jewelry of this age; but if it bothers you, a jeweler could easily replace the clasp with a new one, probably for no charge ~ The necklace measures 20.25" long; the central stone measures 1" wide and just under 2" long, including its bale ~ The red stone and beads have no chips or cracks; they are perfect, and the deep ruby red color is truly mesmerizing! c. 1910, in super condition (we should look so good after 93 years!....) Price = $185.00 |
