Festive Juliana Ruby, Pearl and Aurora Borealis Brooch & Earrings Set NWS 4-1475 ~ I am most certain that this set was made by Delizza and Elster (aka "Juliana"). Collectors know that Juliana jewelry was made in the 1950's, but was never signed. The jewelry was sold with paper hang tags, marked "Juliana", but today very few pieces of Juliana jewelry still have their original paper tags. The company Delizza & Elster made Juliana jewelry. ~ This fabulous set has been heavily plated in gold, and all of the cyrstals have been carefully prong-set. In fact, the gleeming golden prongs are part of the punch of the design. This set was made in the early 1950's, and you can see elements of the popular Retro design period (1938-1952), i.e. the swirling shape of the brooch. This design is an interesting transition from the Retro design era to the later 1950's. ~ Except for the glass pearls, of course, all the stones in this set are faceted. There are a total of 30 large, faux ruby marquises. Can you see the subtle change in the brooch from darker red to a lighter shade of red? Depending on the way the light strikes the stones, this subtle color gradation is noticeable, a gift of D & E's design genius. In fact, they were most famous for their use of unusual stones. Look at the 3rd picture above. There are 5 ruby marquises on the right side of the brooch that are a shade lighter than the others,... sort of a lipstick red. All of the stones in the brooch have closed-back settings. ~ The brooch measures almost 2.25" wide and just over 2" high. ~ The earrings are clips and measure 1.5" long. They contain the darker red marquises, along with glass pearls in a lovely, bright white.
