c. 1870 Onyx Cameo Ring with 14K gold Band

NWS 4-692

~ This lovely old ring has had an interesting history that I can only guess about: it probably started life as an earring and perhaps one of the earrings was lost; or maybe the owner had 2 daughters, so the pair was divided between them and made into rings.  Whatever the history, we do know that re-fashioning jewelry was common, and that decendants often changed inherited jewelry to suit the fashions of the day.

~ The cameo is onyx, set in elaborately decorated, gilded brass

~ A black enameled "vine motif" is on the face of the ring, just above and below the cameo; looks like an olive branch, the symbol of peace

~ Cameo is bezel-set, with ornate, Etruscan beading around the outer edge, a very popular look in early Victorian America

~ The band is of 14K gold, in a simple forked design

~ Some wear to the enamel, and some light tarnish to the underside, but it is clean and is generally in great condition

~ Face measures 7/8" high and .75" wide

~ Ring is a size 3.25, perfect as a pinky ring

Price =  $115.00
