De Nicola Jade, Coral & Diamond Taurus Zodiac Brooch

~ Founded by Jerry De Nicola in 1957, De Nicola produced beautifully crafted, fine quality costume jewelry during the late 1950's and early 1960's. The company soon became part of the Capri Jewelry Company before ceasing operations altogether in 1973. De Nicola jewelry was never plentiful, and, because of its superior quality, workmanship and designs, it is now highly collectible. Indeed, it's rare to find these pieces on the market at all nowadays.

~ De Nicola had a series of astrological jewelry. He created a brooch for each of the 12 zodiac signs.  This gorgeous bull brooch as heavily plated in goldtone metal. His head is made of carved, faux jade glass, while the body is carved coral glass.

He stands proudly on the Taurus symbol,  the horns, which is made of thickly plated rhodium metal, and is additionally decorated with pavé-set, faceted, faux diamonds. The bull also wears a neckband of pavé-set diamonds.

~ This brooch depicts the Taurus bull leaping over a large, enameled  crescent with a diamond-studded star. The enamel is golden and you can see the the enamel glass to the rippled gold underneath, causing a luminescent effect.

~ The crescent is an ancient Taurian symbol for the new moon.  The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. aleph, which means "bull", is the symbol of the moon in its first week and also the name of the sign of the zodiac where the moon's mansions begin. Many letters of the alphabet, hieroglyphs and ideograms are simultaneously associated with the phases of the Moon and with the bull's horns, the latter often compared with the crescent Moon.
