Enamel & Pavé Diamond Hummingbird Brooch c. 1935

NWS 2-1459

~ I'm not an ornithologist, so I'm guessing this could be a hummingbird? Of course, the designer was in a whimsical mood when he created this fabulous brooch, so we don't have to worry about the species. Whatever kind of bird this little fellow is, he is a-dor-a-ble!

~ What an impressive wing span (I think he's showing off...)! Both wings are covered in pavé-set, faceted crystals.

~ In the early part of the 20th century, jewelers used pot metal is a base for costume pieces. The pot metal was then plated in chromium (one of the 4 members of the platinum family of metals).

~ The pavé stones completely cover his body. His head is black enamel, with a grey triangular streak on the side. He has a yellow enamel beak, and one faceted, faux emerald stone marks his eye.

~ His black enameled feet are gripping a brown branch. His wing and tail feathers are black and pewter gray enamel, which makes the faux diamonds really sparkle in contrast. Just lovely.

~ The camera doesn't show this very well, but the bird is actually 3 dimensional. The wing in the foreground sits atop his body, with 2 rivets that can be seen on the reverse of the brooch.

~ This wonderful brooch measures approximately 2" wide and 2.8" high.

~ Swivel-head safety clasp

c. 1935, in excellent vintage condition! The enamel is almost perfect, all the stones are bright, and all are original. Amazing for a piece that is over 70 years old.
