Balenciaga Folded Scarf Necklace NWS 15-1458 ~ This is an elegant, yet simple necklace from the internationally famous French couturier, Cristobal Balenciaga. Just rolling that name off the tongue gives rise to goose flesh. A master among masters, by 1937 he had joined the ranks of such talented French designers as Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Mainbocher. Balenciaga was among the most established couturiers of his time. Born in Spain in 1895 during the reign of Queen Victoria, he died in 1972. Though the name continues today under the direction of different designers, the creations of Cristobal Balenciaga in their original glory are now done, never to be repeated. ~ This necklace bears his signature. It was designed by him in the 1950's or 1960's. It was, of course, created to compliment his clothing. Classy and classic, yet at the same time fresh and new, it resembles golden fabric, draped at the center and sides. ~ The base of the necklace is made of golden mesh that is rolled at both upper and lower edges. Thus, the sides are higher and thicker than the center of the mesh, like fabric. The "scarf" motif has a waffle texture so that it looks woven, with a black enameled edging and a solid gold center just barely visible at the upper edge. ~ The necklace measures 15.75" long and the center is approximately .75" wide. The necklace terminates with a hook and loop. ~ Signed on the reverse with the Balenciaga logo and "Paris". c. 1955, in excellent condition. Find it here and now.... Probably won't find it again....
