Golden Eagle & Flag Brooch "E Pluribus Unum"

NWS 13-1084

~ Today referred to as "sweetheart jewelry", much of the jewelry from the World War I & II eras was sentimental and/or patriotic, and most of it was given as mementos to "sweethearts" at home in America, as the soldier or sailor was leaving our native shores for active duty. This jewelry is now highly collectible. I heard on the news the other day, sadly, that veterans from WW II, what Tom Brokaw has aptly called, "The Greatest Generation", are passing away at a rate of 5,000 per day;   soon all we'll have left, besides their great stories of survival, hardship and bravery, will be these little pieces of jewelry, little tokens of their love

~ This pin features a large star above the golden eagle's head; the star   signified that the wearer had a family member "in service", often a husband, lover or brother.  If the woman had more than one person in the Armed Forces, she would wear a pin with 2 stars, and so on.... These were very popular with American women in the 40's, and frequently a portion of the pin's purchase price would be donated to the War effort

~ The golden eagle is set upon a white enamel background on a shield, and behind that ripples the American flag in red, white & blue enamel with goldtone edging

~ Measures 1.75" wide and 1.25" high

c. 1943, in great condition, with a few flea bites to the enamel, commensurate with age; does not detract

Price = $84.00
