Large Lucite, Reverse Carved Hand Brooch

~ This wonderful brooch is right out of the era of the American Depression:  President Hoover was in the White House..... the unemployment rate was at a staggering all time high: 25.2%..... "Black Tuesday" on Wall Street saw the record breaking exchange of 16,410,035 shares of stock being virtually dumped, worthless, on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange....

~ Now look at the jewelry that our women were wearing. Nothing could break their spirit. As times grew more desperate, their jewelry would grow more whimsical. Lucite figurals were all the rage in the 1930's, and this large hand pin is a perfect example.

~ The fingernails are painted a deep, lipstick red, and the cuff of the sleeve has a yellow enamel flower with blue-green leaves (or a vine?).

~ On the reverse, the area behind the sleeve has been etched by hand. The delicate carvings make the cuff appear to be made of lace from the front, ... just fantastic.

~ This brooch measures 3.75" from sleeve to finger tip, and 1.75" high.

~ The pin mechanism is original and has some discoloration to the metal. It is screwed into the back of the brooch (not glued), which is correct for the period, and bears the old "C" clasp.

c. 1930, in excellent vintage condition, with areas of light scuffing on the reverse. The enamel on the front is perfect. A fun brooch to wear, it will bring smiles to the faces of all who greet you.
